Sometimes people have had the incentive of becoming a doctor from early childhood perhaps through having parents as physicians or simply having a natural desire The truth is I was not one of these children My goal of becoming a physician has not been a life-long desire or an epiphany brought on by one event it is an ambition that has been shaped and strengthened by various life experiences and through meeting incredible people In the course of my past four years studying at Memorial University I have had memorable experiences during my educational volunteering and employment pursuits that have strengthened my aspirations of becoming a physicianI have never been one to turn down an opportunity to learn Having grown up with a parent working in a microbiological setting has made my interests biased towards life sciences Under this influence I chose to pursue Honours in Biology and focused my research on human health-related topics The research project I completed focused on Parkinsons Disease-related genes and the attempt to extend the lifespan of these affected subjects My year of research opened my eyes to the incredible influence research has on the medical field I grew to appreciate how medicine is progressed While having a glance into the world of medicine during my Honours project my desires to take a more hands on approach as a physician were strengthened Although life sciences have always been my subject of interest my degree has shown me that medicine is much more than just science the career of a physician encounters many different academic fields such as social or psychological sciences and biomedical ethics Having a natural appreciation for education in general the idea of being able to study various academic fields has furthered my interest in medicine With hopes of learning more about the different sides of medicine and being opened to new ways of thinking I will be pursuing the Bioethics program at Memorial University this upcoming
