In our early years as children although differently we all experienced play Childs play is something that has been around for centuries and can typically be divided into categories such as sociable play fantasy play and play with toys Play itself can be described as a childs way of learning and experiencing life in a fun and interactive way to promote physical cognitive social emotional creative and language development There are certain philosophers that advocate play They have impacted my understanding and value of play through their theories Erick Erikson and Jean Piaget are two influencers that have helped shape my outlook on play Eriksons Life-Span Theory of socioemotional development shapes the way we view changes in childrens personalities In Eriksons theory from birth to age one it is important for caregivers to act on and motivate an infant when they show signs for nourishment love play and sleep in order to learn trust and security Children are curious about the world around them and need encouragement to carry on with their own activities Follari 40 Piagets stages of cognitive development lay the foundation for growth and change throughout early childhood Children discover the world around them and develop cognitively through nature and nurture They learn through exploration that shapes their individually instructed way of learning knowledge Young children start out thinking symbolically and can only advance to thinking rationally and then abstractly by experimenting hands on through play For example when a child recognizes that two glasses that arent the same size could still contain the same amount of water they are learning to think comprehensively through play and every day experiences If you sit back and reminisce about your childhood experiences Id imagine you would remember running around at the playground outside playing board games or participating in any other sort of childrens play all day every day It seems that
