During his 2003 CBC Massey Lecture Thomas King opened his lecture by making this statement The truth about stories is that thats all we are 2003 King Humankind has been telling and retelling stories since the beginning of their existence In some form or another narrative stories have played a role in the development of human society throughout time Before a single word had been written there were stories that were told through the word of mouth scratchings and paintings of simple things and gestures It is known by most that there can be great moral value to any given story but often times in the complicated and abundant world of available knowledge that was the twentieth century and is now the twenty-first century that knowledge is lost or blurred That however does not impede that as far as people are concerned the answers to lifes philosophical questions those ethical ones in particular are best answered through the narrative story Religion and religious stories may be the most significant and powerful proof of this That is not to say that the role and effect of more fictitious stories Tolkiens The Hobbit or Dr Seusss The Lorax are but two examples cannot have just as much ethically worth as far as people are concerned Few people know and respect the power and value of a story more than the native peoples of North America Many of their cultures and societies were and still are based oral storytelling therefore making them even greater proof that stories hold the answers to many ethical questions and issues The aboriginals were experts on stories but none of their stories have carried as much weight or power as those that are the foundation of Christianity Islam Judaism and any of mankinds other major religions So powerful are these stories many believe that they stories are the first stories ever toldThe argument could be made by those who are religious and even
