Renaissance meaning re-birth saw the end of the Middle Ages and a reemergence of Roman and Greek philosophy which led to the development of the cultural movement known as Humanism Beginning in Italy around the 14th century and lasting through the 17th century it eventually spread throughout the rest of Europe During this time there were revolutionary changes in attitudes and ideas which could make life better for everyone Instead of focusing on religious issues humanists were concerned with the individual and naturalism Humanism affected the artistic community in many ways and how artists were perceived The subject matter of art changed dramatically Artists began painting the people of the day instead of religious icons Artists began paying attention to the human anatomy and portraying the body with anatomical correctness instead of the way previous artists painted in an abstract way that didnt look real Giotto di Bondone was the first important painter and began painting people and objects as they looked in real life instead of the way previous artists abstract way Humanism brought a more secular approach to art Humanism in art attributed the potential of the individual to man instead of God Artists began to paint everyday people and landscaped instead of just focusing on depicting biblical scenes and saints Artists created many new techniques The development of linear perspective and realistic human faces and bodys emphasis was placed on realism and attention to detail Artists like Michangelo studied human anatomy and these new techniques gave paintings a three-dimensional life-like quality Instead of using the human eye to represent three-dimensional space in painting the use of mathematical perspective was invented to represent space in paintings In the early 15th century oil paints were invented and being used for
