Nurses are professionals that work in a variety of settings and capacities which allow them to engage with the public in numerous ways The College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia CRNBC provides and maintains the document Professional Standards for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners in order to sustain that individuals seeking entry to practice and maintaining registration are competent and ethical individualsCRNBC 2012 p1 This document provides support to nursing professionals to allow them to understand their obligations and responsibilities as a nurse but is also essentially for the public as it can offer answers about nursing and provides expectations of nursing practice CRNBC p5 It also provides employers with resources to provide support to nurses as well as enabling the CRNBC to assemble its legal responsibility of regulating nurses practice CRNBC 2012 There are four standards set out in CRNBCs professional standards document and each standard contains a number of indicators that provide specific criteria for each standard Standards are set achievable levels of performance that can be measured based on the actual performance These set only a minimum level of acceptable performance not a limited amount In this paper specific examples from several nursing journals will illustrate how nurses meet each of the four standards as each nurse works within their profession Nurses work with the public consequently they are not only interacting with clients but also colleagues students and the general public With all of these people nurses take on a role as an educator It is important to note the influence that nurses have with the people they work with For example consider the impact nurses have on advising smoking cessation When a patient is educated by a nurse practitioner he or she is almost twice as likely to attempt quitting as patients not counseled by a nurse practitioner Potter 2013 p266 Although nurses do have a large amount of power it is not something intended for force The nurse
