After Apple Picking is a prime example of Robert Frosts endowment as a poet The diction the speaker uses plays a major role in the interpretation of the poem Frost uses a very significant word choice which strongly helps develop a peaceful dreamlike tone In Frosts classic narrative poem the speaker is a dying old man whom is exhausted and somewhat disappointed from the lack of accomplishment experienced throughout the course of his life What seems as merely as a scrap of work published effortlessly is an intricate poetic goldmine Underneath the surface of the structure lies profound symbolism The shallow statement of And theres a barrel that I didnt fill Beside it there may be two or three Apples I didnt pick upon some bough Frost 3-5 at first glance may appear as a simple task of picking apples However this is not the case There is strong symbolism represented by the apple The apples represent the speakers opportunities in life The ones picked represent his completed activities or achievements whereas the unpicked apples represent his unfulfilled ambitions in life The narrator says For I have had too much Of apple-picking I am overtired Of the great harvest I myself desired 26-28 This statement signifies the overall acceptance of what he has done in his life Frost is stating that he is depleted of creativity and needs a sort of deathlike winter sleep as stated later in the poem to replenish his poetic mind a hibernation some may sayThis poem presents an experience in which the world of consciousness and the post world dreams mingle In the midst of the poem there is a dainty barrier between reality and fantasy The tone shift signifies this barrier In the beginning of the poem prior to the shift there is an indicated dreamy tranquil tone Toward heaven still 2 is a metaphor that signifies a peaceful ending of the mans life The speaker claims to
