Diogenes once said that Beggars get handouts before philosophersbecause people have some idea of what its like to be blind and lameThat still rings true today Humans have always struggled with questionsof mortality and faith that just seem unanswerable Philosophersthroughout the ages have tried to logically solve these questions and tocreate an idea of what it means to be human The analogy most often usedwhen describing what human life is like is to compare it to a quest insearch of something more For most people this something more can berepresented by an idea of the ultimate truth However two things mustbe realized in order for a person to come close to realizing thislife-long goal In the journey towards the ultimate truth 1individuals must acknowledge their irrational shortcomings and 2embrace the rational powers of their mind In regards to this journey individuals must understand theirirrational limitations while on their passage towards the ultimatetruth One of the first philosophers to realize this concept wasSocrates Within The Apology Socrates realized he had superior wisdomwhen compared to others by declaring I am wiser than this man it islikely that neither of us knows anything worthwhile but he thinks heknows something when he does not whereas when I do not know neither doI think I know so I am likely to be wiser than he to this small extentthat I do not think I know what I do not know To simplify Socratesrealized part of his wisdom he possessed came from the acknowledgementthat he does not know absolutely everything By allowing himself toadmit to being wrong it made Socrates that much wiser than everyoneelse Another example of how comprehending that a lack of knowledge canactually lead to more wisdom is Descartes Discourse on Method andMeditations on First Philosophy Before beginning his meditations ReneDescartes promises to apply himself earnestly and unreservedlyto this general demolition of his opinions because for him thefacts he had gathered through empirical data might not be
