You wanted us to write about a defining moment or a time when we were most terrified Some will tell you of a wonderful surprise or a horrifying experience or freak accident that only by a miracle they survived You may not find my story quite as enthralling but to me this has been the most life-changing person I have had the exceptional experience of knowing It was when my best friend gave me refuge at her house It is hard to describe in words how you feel about someone that saves you Howbeit I will try to put into words the way she affected my life and until this day still lets me know she is there for meShe was a quiet girl She was plain yet there was something about her personality that drew people to her It was something about her personality that drew people to her It was dark that night and about seven minutes past my curfew I was scared to death to come into the house Reluctantly I opened the front door trying not to make any noise and there he stood His fire red eyes seemed to burn a whole right through to my soul As I tried to explain that we had had a flat tire it was as if I was spitting out nothing but gibberish My father threw me against the wall and slapped me My mother and brother fearful that he would not stop screamed with terror I fled from the house as fast as I could I ran to my best friends house and knocked on the door She asked no questions she just embraced me She said I could stay as long as I neededIt was not long before I met the father of my children He wanted me to be solely committed to our relationship as abusers do and wanted me to have no more contact with my best friend I
