Forms of slavery are still present today and the legacy of slavery persists The region wide slavery and colonialism that occurred during the 19th and 20th centuries is always swept under the rug as if it never happened however the affects slavery and colonialism left on people were very severe and are not forgotten The affects of slavery and colonialism can be viewed through Sethe in Beloved and Lucy in Lucy The two characters both face the affects of slavery and colonization as they try to draw a distinguishing line between their present and past through out each of the novels Sethe escapes being a slave on a plantation only to have her past creep back up on her while Lucy gets assimilated into a new culture and location while her past catches up to her with each attempt of adapting Despite not living in the era of slavery and colonization the pasts of Sethe and Lucy continue to haunt them The two are unable to escape the past and move on due to the need for liberation protection and the longing for love and motherhood-mother Lucy comes to America to escape her old colonized life under British rule and her mother It is apparent however ambiguous that she is in search of a freedom and independence that has been hindered by her childhood Once in America she becomes an au pair for a wealthy family Lucy had a challenging childhood and an interesting relationship with her mother Early on she had a very close relationship with her mother they were seemingly identical However the birth of her three brothers brought the death of their special relationship Lucy tells Mariah the woman she works as an au pair for that every time one of her brothers was born her parents announced to each other with great seriousness that the new child would go to a university in England and study to become a
