Bridget's feedback:
"You are off to a good start with this essay's use of biographical detail and description of mathematic concepts to create the narrative and argumentation. I notice a conclusion tying the two men together (rather broadly), but without a similar introduction, the reader is lost until the final sentence explains the thesis and purpose of the essay. An introduction will help place the reader in the paper's purpose, including the reason for choosing these two particular individuals.
In terms of the body, I recommend paragraphing within the discussion -- the current long paragraph structures obscure the development. You have a good sense of sentence variety, flow, and dynamism, and I especially like the sentence terming Stifel "an eccentric mathematician"; that particular sentence is a good example of where a more personal voice intersects successfully with formal writing to create interest, irony, and style. There are other moments where this is not as successful, resulting in overly casual diction. Keep playing around with your style and word choice to strike that balance. As a final comment, do make sure to proofread for errors and typos, including missing words that change the meaning of a sentence ("He did like the idea of taking money from poor people.")."
