Jonathon Edwards So that thus it is that natural men are held in the hand of God over the pit of hell Not only was he a theologian and a philosopher He was a brilliant writer The powerful writings of Jonathon Edwards have heavily influenced modern literature from the beginning to the end of his life In the beginning of his life he made many contributions He was born in Connecticut He entered Yale at age thirteen after studying Latin Greek and Hebrew Jonathon Edwards Homepage He later graduated and was converted to Jesus Christ Edwards became a pastor of the Northampton church in Massachusetts where he succeeded his grandfather At the time this was one of the most influential churches outside of Boston He was later dismissed from the church due to unpopular beliefs He believed in strict rules which didnt go over well with the congregation From here he went to the mission post of Stockbridge This is the location where many of his famous works were conjured up The best known of these is Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God His best known sermon was delivered during the time known as the Great Awakening JE A New Biography Iain Murray During this time thousands of people were attending church daily and revival swept across the nation Edwards is remembered for his preaching on all of the Lords attributes especially his love strength and mercy Nothing compares to his portrayal of the Lords hatred of sin Although Edwards lacked charisma his words touched the souls of many in ways never imagined He was known to never look up at his congregation only to stare at the rope for the church bell He helped many of his listeners and followers feel the power of words Words so powerful entire congregations moaned along with people fainting as he spoke While reading through the sermon the word hell is used more often
