JIMI HENDRIX THE ROCK SUPERSTARS LEGACY It is said that some are born great some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon em Shakespeare 1601 Jimi Hendrix was not born into stardom nor was it bestowed upon him in any way Throughout his life he strived for the top and the effort did not prove to be in vain This American rock guitarist made a legendary mark He invented unique techniques and his performances on stage were mesmerizing and provocative He became one of the most influential music figures not only in the history of rock n roll but also on pop culture as a whole Mitchell p 32 Johnny Allen Hendrix his father changed it to James Marshall Hendrix in 1946 was born on November 27 1942 in Seattle Washington to Al and Lucille Hendrix Growing up wasnt easy for Hendrix He changed schools frequently and his parents divorced in 1958 As if that wasnt enough his mother died just one year later By then he became desperate for something to turn to Hendrix purchased his first guitar in 1958 a five-dollar second-hand acoustic Hendrix was quickly discovered by Little Richard another famous rock n roll figure in 1963 However he felt the tour was degrading and he was constrained as being a sideman to Richard Moreover his guitar was kept in the shadows as background rhythm so he finally abandoned Richards tour in St Louis Mitchell p 102 He later embarked as a traveling musician for various tours backing such 2 artists as Ike and Tina Turner Muddy Waters Elmore James BB King Chuck Berry King Curtis Solomon Burke Chuck Jackson Jackie Wilson and several others Hendrix soon became a discombobulated mess He was running from band to band in a frantic pursuit of his own identity In 1964 as luck would have it Ronnie Isley of the Isley Brothers hired him as lead
