"There is a lot of information packed into this essay. While much of it provides good insight into John Jay's life, there are significant problems with focus and organization.

While your main topic seems to be what Jay did to shape American foreign policy, a large portion of the essay veers away from this topic for multiple paragraphs. The details of his early life are excessive and much of the first few paragraphs does little to support your thesis statement. The organization of this section is problematic as well. You discuss his marriage and the birth of his children before going back and mentioning his education when he was eight years old, for example.

Consider your thesis statement as you go through each paragraph and remove any information that doesn't directly contribute to your reader's understanding of that main idea.

There is an informal tone to certain parts of your essay that doesn't quite fit an academic essay. This includes the overly gruesome descriptions in your intro and hyperbolic phrases such as "his brain was the size of the Andromeda Galaxy."

Finally, be sure to proofread for misused words (such as "furthermore") and awkward phrasing (such as "unordinary")."
