Born into slavery Frederick Bailey was owned by the Auld brothers in Maryland In his teenage years Frederick had leverage among the other slaves because his worthy skills and brains The Aulds gave him work that was away from the plantation which gave him the advantage to discreetly educate himself at an underground academy in Baltimore In the midst of his learning he found his love Anna Murray Soon after he planned his escape to New York him and AnnaAfter Frederick and Anna married they continued to move to Massachusetts to outrun the slave catchers He even adopted the last name Douglass to be extra precautious Meanwhile Douglass began to read a life-changing passage The Liberator by William Lloyd Garrison which influenced him to start attending meetings for the American Anti-Slavery Association Frederick Douglass had found his lifes passion when he met Garrison Garrison was intrigued by Douglasss speech and insisted in hiring himIn 1844 Douglass settled on writing his autobiography The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass An American Slave that became the bestseller in the North His success and the paranoia of being caught by slave catchers eventually led him to tour around Europe sharing his milestones in lifeWith Douglass touring around Europe he found success in doing lecturing Douglass felt safe and secure where he was in Europe and that was the main reason to his success With all the touring and different things people wanted Douglass to do he refused it because he missed his family and he wanted to return home The friends that Douglass met in England offered him to buy his freedom and he accepted Not to long after that he made an offer to his owner and he became free in the United StatesIn a short time Douglass made his home with his family in Rochester New York establishing his newspaper justifying the cause of abolition He did that to avoid competing with Garrisons
