The literary trip to Dublin was a great way for the class to understand the inspiration for Ulysses as well as give us a taste of Irelands capital While I felt I learned a great deal about Ulysses and Irish culture on the trip I had a tough time picturing some of the places described in the text The growth of the city over the last few decades into a European financial city has taken away the charm that is described into detail within each episode While many historic landmarks still stand scattered throughout the city the majority of the city has largely changed with fast food chains and offices placed within the buildings that provided the backdrop for famous Irish novels Despite this change I found the city to be very charming and could easily see why famous literary writers have used Dublin as the setting of their works The first destination on our journey through Dublin was to the number one tourist attraction in every country the hotel As we drove through Dublin on the way to the hotel I noticed a few different things that created some curiosity into Dublins growth into a city The first thing I noticed is how the architectural style of buildings changed in different areas of the city which represented a different part of Dublins history This made me quickly see that Dublin is a city that has consistently grown throughout the decades After settling into the hotel a few members of our group ventured with our bus driver Liam to the oldest pub in Ireland Beyond the noise and busy streets was a side street that had a very plain looking bar Within that pub was a packed room filled with traditional Irish music older couples speaking Gaelic and plenty of Guinnesss being poured This was the type of Irish pub that people come to experience Coming from Cork where the city is over run
