Y2K is shorthand for the potential of computer operating systems software programs and microchips to malfunction on January 1 2000 Without being repaired or replaced many of these information technology components may misread the century change as 1900 instead of 2000 Y2K is a major issue for management because if the computers are unable to interpret the correct date it could mean major confusion Computer systems manage many different day to day operations such as replenishing inventories essential human services vital statistic and bank accounts There are many things that could happen if computer systems malfunction Computerized inventory systems are very crucial to todays businesses Our food supply system is a prime example Farmers food processors transportation companies distributors wholesalers and retailers all use information technology to get food from farm to the store If one part of the system fails the entire system is potentially shutdown Essential human services may shut down on January 1st There are many but just to name a few Social security records might be wiped out If vital statistics were erased there would be no record of things like marriages births deaths etc This would not only create major chaos for the public but the amount of time and money would be costly Essential human services not performed like social security checks not being delivered would pose serious problems for the elderly The mail delivery system itself might go down causing important documents and bills to remain undelivered Emergency services such as the national 911 service might go down and in the event of emergencies professional help might not be able to be obtained These are major concerns for DoD FDIC and the public The Y2K bug could affect monetary systems including all banks Records on file such as checking and savings accounts could get wiped out ATM machines might go out of service People are going to want extra cash on hand not trusting their
