In the United States Army today there are many opportunities to test your limits physically and mentally Whether it is going to Ranger School Airborne School or going on a Spur Ride Those opportunities tend to draw soldiers with abundant amounts of intestinal fortitude Those soldiers who have internal drive to just keep moving even when others fall to the way side soldiers who believe being marginal is an unacceptable standard I was given one such opportunity to find out what type of soldier I was Early one morning during June of 2008 I found myself gearing up for the longest Road March I would ever undertake the long awaited Spur Ride The Spur Ride is a once a year event that every soldier in the Eleventh Armored Calvary Regiment looks forward too It is a 31 mile march to and back from Tiefort Mountain located in the Southern California Desert The day starts with formation at 630 am and the air is cool but that will soon be replaced by the heat of the Mojave Desert Each of us checks our gear we make sure to have enough water and MREs to last us until the next day Our Ruck Sacks Military Packs have to contain at least 50lbs of gear so after we load them up we must weigh them After an initial safety and route brief its time to gather at the multipurpose field for a formation and hear a few words from our Garrison Commander The time is now 1000 am and it is time to begin
