The book Freakonomics is an intriguing hodgepodge of articles teeming with information derived from data analyzed by one of the most well-regarded economists Steven D Levit who sees the world through a unique perspective not even matched by his fellow economists He doesnt proclaim to be a man of numbers in fact at one point he even goes as far as to admit his fear of calculus Levit uses raw data to reveal how the world around us works through various instances and circumstances all of which are tied together by what Levit and his co-author Stephen J Dubner a journalist argueis the most basic fundamental principle of economics incentives These facts while seemingly unorganized are so universal and generalizable that they can appeal to anyone regardless of education gender nationality interests etc While Freakonomics is an intriguing concept it does present some moral dilemmas Freakonomics style thinking simply doesnt traffic in morality If morality represents the ideal world then economics represents the actual worldLevitt Dubner 2011What this data reveals is not for the fond of heart in truthLevit states on various accounts that he is simply stating the facts nothing more nothing less Levit explains that there are three categories of incentives They are as follows Economic social and moral The example Levit provides is focused primarily on anti-smoking The economic incentive would be any sin tax associated with cigarettes the social incentive would be restaurants and bars banning smoking from their establishments and lastly claiming that terrorists raise money by selling cigarettes originating from the back market challenges individuals morally Levit explains the workings of incentives through various ways one of which is founded on the happenstance of an Israeli daycare A frequentdilemma for daycares isunpunctual parents picking up their children late This causes the daycare to lose money because a teacher now has to stay after work in order to watch the children of the tardy parents Looking at this issue through
