The Warren Court is likely the most controversial court in United States history Remarkably liberal the court constantly came under heavy fire from the president and the people alike The Warren Court consistently ruled in favor of the underdog and time and time again made life better for criminals the sexually liberated minorities and smaller religious or political groups The Warren Court promoted the equality of all groups and did so through many very important cases that are still cited today most noticeably Griswold v Connecticut Gideon v Wainwright and the School District of Abington Township v Schemmp In 1965 in Connecticut the use of contraceptives was illegal even amongst married couples In Griswold v Wainwright the Warren Court ruled the Connecticut law unconstitutional based on the right to privacy a right not specifically mentioned in the constitution The Warren Court interpreted that the Ninth Amendment gave the people of the United States the right to privacy even though it was not specifically mentioned in the constitution and ruled according to the Fourteenth Amendment that the Connecticut law was unconstitutional This case firmly established the right to privacy without which contraceptives would be illegal and set a precedent for Roe v Wade This fundamental right to privacy is now commonly used in arguments all of the United States especially in the continuing abortion debate In 1963 the Warren Court ruled on Gideon v Wainwright Gideon accused to burglary was arrested and sent to trial without a lawyer because he was too poor to afford his own and Florida law only allowed counsel to be provided for capital punishment cases The Warren court decided that based on the Fifth and Sixth Amendments any person is deserving of counsel in case they cannot afford it themselves This ruling paved the way for Miranda v Arizona to open counsel to all parts of a criminal investigation including police interrogations Today this ruling continues to help people
