She sees the murderer in me I thought 293 Joe starts as an innocent thirteen-year-old boy to a murderer within a short time period Many may argue free will caused Joe to kill Linden Lark But a thirteen-year-old boy does not become a murderer overnight from his own choices and free will Many actions of his prove fate was in control during the summer the novel takes place In The Round House Joe murdering Linden is caused by fate because the author intentionally shows Joes trends of violence which escalate to the killingJoes violence starts as thoughts and points the author gives the reader that foreshadows to his violence For example the author foreshadows Joe will have to protect his mother I was the sort of kid who spent a Sunday afternoon prying little trees out of the foundation of his parents house I should have given in to the inevitable truth that this was the sort of person I would become in the end but I kept fighting it 5 The trees represent Linden and the rape of Geraldine The action of Joe prying the trees off the foundation of the house represent him prying Linden off the burdens of his mothers worries His parents represent the foundation of the house because they are the foundation of the family The author purposely places this quote in the beginning of the novel to validate Joe has prior knowledge due to fate he will have to protect his mother He attempts to fight fate but as he and the reader knows he cannot do this because he will have to protect his mother very soon after this scene He knew someone needed to kill his mothers attacker because of the wrong the attacker had brought to the family inevitably it would be Joe When Joe first hears what happened to his mother he says I wanted to know that whoever had attacked my mother would be
