Over the past ten years working as a labor and delivery nurse I have been employed in four different states and at seven different hospitals These various settings gave me opportunities to serve different populations within the birthing community While in downtown Phoenix I worked predominantly with the Hispanic population I took pride in learning different Spanish phrases so I could better communicate with my patients While I didnt agree with some of their cultural preferences ie not willing to sign for a blood transfusion I did my best to provide safe and preventive care In suburban Colorado I was faced with a community that took a very holistic approach to birthing This was the first time I was introduced to the concept of a doula I was very intrigued by this professional practice I decided to take the doula course myself just to make sure I wasnt missing out on any skills that could help my patients These experiences taught me that while I was proficient in pharmacology and fetal monitoring I also needed to be equally prepared on how to provide quality care regardless of the patients cultural background In the healthcare field our mission is to adapt to our patient population and serve their needs Although our outlooks may differ it is our responsibility to respect and even celebrate differences in culture I chose Born in the Big Rains because we have a population of Somalian refugees based out of Salt Lake City I spent some time working at a hospital in Salt Lake and was able to work briefly with the population Korns first hand telling of female genital mutilation is one that not only opened my eyes but also opened my heart to a population that has an immense need for support Growing up with four sisters there was never a moment of silence in our home Our parents encouraged us to vocalize opinions ask questions and
