AbstractThe United States has been experiencing an economic decline for the couple of years The resulting factors have lead to massive job lost among other things Unemployment has been found to cause a wide array of negative side effects psychologically and physically The side effects of unemployment have also been seen to spill over to family members The purpose of this study is to evaluate the extent to which unemployed individuals have on undergraduates expectation for career success and how it varies based on socioeconomic status The study will consist of 20 student participants from Central Connecticut State University from a diverse background Surveys to determine socioeconomic status pre-employment and student expectation will be administered Surveys will be scored using a Likert scale descriptive statistic via SPSS will be used to analyze the dataFor the past several years the United States have experienced massive job lost According to a report conducted by the Congressional Research Service unemployment has jumped from 50 in December of 2007 to 100 in October of 2009Levine 2013 The United States is said to be in the recovery stage however recent October 2013 Bureau of Labor Statistics report suggests there are currently 113 million unemployed individuals within the United States placing the rate of unemployment at 73 Among those unemployed teenagers account for 222 adult males 70 and adult females 64 Broken down by racial categories African Americans experience the highest rate of unemployment at 131 Hispanic the second highest at 91 followed by Whites at 63 and Asians at 52 US Department of Labor 2006 There are three types of unemployment frictional situational and cyclical The fictional unemployed are workers that voluntarily left their jobs individuals reentering the labor force individuals temporary laid off first time job seekers such at college graduates and unemployed workers in-between jobs Situational unemployed are individuals who do not have the skills needed for the available jobs or individuals who do not have access to
