Imperium the right to command or to employ the force of the state sovereignty Throughout history this right has been overused and abused From the first civilization in Mesopotamia to modern day Jordan sole rulers have emerged Many times this sole rule can be a good thing because it allows for a peaceful transfer of power but when a bad leader comes to power it can easily cause the downfall of a society In many cases other generals or leaders fight for power from a corrupt or weak ruler or people revolt and new leaders arise This can often cause a civil war and kill many people in the process But what makes a successful rule It is often successful reforms or lowering taxes or a strong defense against other nations But the most successful rules are considered to be those of military conquest Ruling over vast lands and different people is difficult and can cause internal conflict and a successful empire is always a target Many rulers become paranoid and go on killing sprees while others are not careful enough Historys most powerful rulers had short-lived reigns due to their obsession with power Some of the most iconic and successful generals lived in ancient times including Alexander the Great He influenced many generals who came after him but he also set a dangerous precedent for gaining power As the son of Philip II of Macedon and Olympias of Epirus Alexander was named heir to the Macedonian throne at the age of 19 Alexander was strongly influenced by his mother and he had problems with legitimacy because of conflicts with his father and claims by Olympias that his father was actually Zeus He was jealous of his fathers success and strived to surpass it so when his father was killed suspicions fell on him He knew the killer which gave him means By killing his father or at least encouraging his murder he ended
