Scientists and paleontologists today are still debating many thingsrelating to birds and their connection with dinosaurs Are birds evolvedfrom dinosaurs or are they cousins sharing the same common ancestorThis is one of the many things paleontologists cant seem to agree onThere is evidence to support both of the sides to these arguments I however believe that birds did evolve from dinosaurs The second point of disagreement is on how feathered reptiles or earlybirds gained flight Did they clamber up trees leaping off to glide ordid they run at some sort of an incline flapping their armswings untilthey gained flight The first piece of evidence that birds evolved from dinosaurs isArchaeopteryx and Deinonychus Dr John H Ostrom has examined these twospecimens and the similarities are striking the only major differenceis the fact that the Archaeopteryx has feathers Ostrom found twenty-twosimilarities between birds and dinosaurs found in no other group Archaeopteryx is a perfect blend of both bird and reptile It had birdfeet and feathers both indicating birdlike looks but on the other handit also had jaws lined with small sharp teeth something we see inreptiles and not birds Without its feathers an Archaeopteryx could beeasily misidentified as a coelurosaur in fact it was An Archaeopteryxspecimen was mistaken for a coelurosaur for almost one hundred yearsuntil Dr Peter Wellnhofer noticed impressions of feathers in 1993 There are many other similarities between dinosaurs and birds Theseinclude hollowed bones flexible wrists a digitigrade stance and acollarbone fused to form a wishbone furcula as well as many othercharacteristicsPaleontologists who believe that birds and dinosaurs shared anancestor rather than believing that birds evolved from dinosaurs saythat the evidence supporting the latter doesnt prove anything Theystate that things like the gaps in the fossil record betweenArchaeopteryx and similar dinosaurs that it could have evolved from aretoo large the differences in toe and finger digits and lack of overallevidence makes the dinosaur-to-bird theory unconvincing Paleontologists are also disagreeing on how feathered reptiles gainedflight
