The Aztec are named form the word Aztlan meaning White Land or Place of the Herons They had many other names They were called the Tenochca and the Mexica The Aztec called to themselves as Culhua Mexica Nahuatl was the language they spoke and are still spoken in central Mexico The origin of the Aztec people is uncertain After their arrival in the valley the Aztecs settled in its northwestern section It was there that they first made chinampas artificial islands They were built in shallow water and intensively cultivated Later the tribe moved to the Hill of Chapultepec They fortified the land with stone walls There they had their first king It was Huitilihuitl the elder of the tribe The leading city state in the valley Culhuaacan and its allies attacked the Aztecs Huitzilopochtli was taken prisoner and sacrificed The Aztecs were confined to Tizapan the southern section of the valley Later they settled on and island in the western part of Lake Texcoco It is estimated between 1368 and 1371 when the two sections of the tribe founded the twin towns of Mexico Tenochtitn and Mexico Tlatelelco In 1375 Culhuacan gave Tenochtitlan its first king Acamapichtli The tribe went on and in 1428 the two kings of the twin towns Chimalpopoca and Tlacateotl were executed The king Azcapotzalco suspected them and others of disloyalty In the same year a rebellion broke out Nezahualcoyotl was one leader of the rebellion A war then began with the storming of Azcahualcoyatl and ended in 1431 with the enthroning of Nezahualcoyotl at Texcoco A triple alliance of Tenochtitlan Texcoco and Tlacopan was made Tlacopan and Azcapotzalco belonged to the same tribe called the Tepanec The Tenochca became the dominant power They built an empire in central and southern Mexico By 1519 the empire covered about 15000 square miles and the population was of 5 to 6 million people Relations beween Tenochtitlan and Tlatelolco
