The epic poem of Beowulf includes both pagan and Christian ideas and values The author is unknown but the writer probably was an eighth-century Anglo-Saxon monk While Beowulf possesses a number of characteristics three main traits stand out He is courageous strong and loyal First Beowulf shows great courage throughout the poem When Beowulf fights Grendel he does it without weapons Beowulf states my hands Alone shall fight for me267-8 Having no fear Beowulf goes into the battle unarmed in order to demonstrate his stature Another point that illustrates his bravery is when Beowulf is about to fight the dragon He says Ive never known fear It shows that Beowulf is not afraid of anything Second Beowulf is a very strong individual An example of Beowulf being strong and courageous is when he is fighting the dragon Then Beowulf rose still brave still strong650 indicates this in a very straight-forward manner As Beowulf fights Grendel with his bare hands the poet states that Grendel has never met a man whose hands were harder327 It reveals that Beowulf has an enormously powerful grip Another event that exibits his strength occurs during the battle with Grendels mother Beowulf grabs the sword crafted by giants but it is so massive no ordinary man could lift it533 It is evident that Beowulf is much mightier than a normal person is Finally Beowulf is loyal to his subjects and followers As Beowulf is facing Grendel he is called a mighty protector of men When Beowulf is about to dive into the lake to face Grendel the name noble protector461 describes him These both show that he is willing to do anything to protect the people who are dependent upon him including risking his life thus displaying full devotion to them At the moment when Beowulf battles the dragon it is inferred that he is so loyal enough to his people that he would fight to protect them even
