In Barbra Kingsolvers novel The Bean Trees nearly every importantcharacter is haunted by events in their past The past events showthemselves in the characters thought processes in their actions andin outside factors All the characters are running there are obviousreasons but the fear of the past is what keeps them going When pastevents catch up many of the characters are reluctant to relinquish thehold that such events have on them regardless of the pain that iscaused The characters all have ghosts in their pasts that try to catchup with them but each character finds a way to ultimately deal withtheir past problems despite their nature to not let go Of all the characters Esperanza has the worst past but she alsofinds it very hard to forget the awful events and move on Esperanzasown daughter Ismene was taken by the Guatemalan government as abargaining chip to get information out of her husband Her husbanddecides to keep the information a secret and the two flee the countryAfter their long journey to the United States she is confronted withsomething that so agonizingly reminds her of the past Turtle Thisyoung girl looks exactly like the small child taken from EsperanzaEsperanza was just stepping out of the cab and when she saw the kidsshe fell back against the seat just as if shed been hit withtwenty-eight pounds of air For the next ten minutes she lookedblanched like a boiled vegetable She couldnt take her eyes offTurtle 93 Esperanza is unable to deal with her emotions toward herdaughter throughout the story Even during the ride back to OklahomaTaylor swears that Esperanza calls Turtle Ismene It isnt until the end that Esperanza deals with her feelings towardsTurtle and her daughter While signing that she gives legal custody ofTurtle to Taylor Esperanza breaks into tears and delivers a smallspeech about why they have to give her up While this is for Turtlesadoption it is clear that Esperanza has found a way to deal
