The Peguis First Nations group is located in Manitoba Canada about 145 km north of Winnipeg and is home to approximately seven thousand people The majority of the people are of Cree or Anishinaabe descent the name that most Ojibwe Odawa and Algonquin people call themselves 2 The name Peguis was adopted by the people in honor of the chief who led them to the land they settled on 4 People of Anishinaabe origin speak a language known as Anishinaabemowin Anishinaabemowin is one of the oldest and most historically rich languages still spoken today Many elders of the group are concerned that their language is at risk of dying out because parents no longer speak to their children in the language and due to the impacts of the western world on the young 7 In the late 1700s Chief Peguis led his band formerly known as St Peters Band to an area north of what is now known has Selkirk to settle It wasnt until 1817 when the chief and a couple of others signed the Selkirk Treaty 2 This treaty settled the difference between Lord Selkirk and the first nations over how the land should be split up between the Europeans and them1 Although there isnt a lot of exact information on the geography and climate of just the Peguis reserve the general east and north parts of Manitoba have relatively similar environments Cold lakes and coniferous forests largely surround the reserve supplying it with an abundance of fresh water rich farming land that is full of minerals and plenty of forestry assets 6 Recently rainfall in the area has been excessively heavy and has flooded many areas of the Peguis territory The floods and poor drainage systems have caused pools of unsanitary water to accumulate and have forced many to evacuate their homes They have caused back roads to fill up stopping many kids from going to school and have also caused hydropower
