We as human beings love to gossip We have a multimillion dollarindustry called tabloid news that deals specifically with rumors andgossip What makes these stories so interesting to us Why do we hopethese fanciful stories are true even when we know they cant be Whatmakes us retell them as if we truly believe they are real even withlittle to no evidence I believe it comes from our core ideas the oneswe are raised with and indoctrinated by society The idea that ever badperson should get whats coming to them the idea that love overcomes allboundaries and obstacles and the idea that our opinions are the correctopinions We pick and choose stories that help us affirm these beliefsand those are the stories that become legend Much like our ancestors tobe passed from person to personMany TV shows movies and books rely on the principle that people wantto see the good guy succeed and the bad guy fail There are countlessstories of woman and men getting even with a partner who has scornedthem Like the story of the woman in New York City who bought abillboard with her shared bank account to advertise her husbandsinfidelity The one where the wife sells her husband brand new car for50 dollars because the divorce settlement said she had to give him themoney for it Or my favorite the story where a marine who was deployedgot a letter from his girlfriend tell him she was leaving him Hegathered up as many pictures of girls as he could and sent them to hersaying he forgot which one she was and if she could take her picture outand send the rest back We desperately want these stories to be truebecause it hides the fact that life is not fair Many religions arebased on the idea that good people get good things and bad people willget bad things This gives people the ultimate believe that even if thatbad person does not get what
