A Tale Of Two Cities Characters Jarvis Lorry - An elderly businessman who works for Tellsons Bank He is a very businesslike bachelor with an honest and good heart Lucie Manette - A young French woman who grew up in England She was raised as a ward of Tellsons Bank when her parents were assumed dead This character is marked by her compassion and love Lucie binds the other characters in the story together serving as its central figure Doctor Manette - Lucies father a brilliant scientist He has been imprisoned in the Bastille for eighteen years Although he recovers his mental health during the novel his long imprisonment scarred his mind He proves to be a good father whom Lucie loves dearly Charles Darnay - A Frenchman who chooses to live in England for secret reasons Darnay becomes Lucies husband and the father of her children He is a good man but his origins are mysterious Sydney Carton - An insolent indifferent alcoholic lawyer He too loves Lucie but knows he is unworthy of her Once a man with a promising future Cartons life has since gone downhill Carton is supposed to be the polar opposite of Darnay who has made good of his life He becomes the protagonist late in the novel Monsieur Defarge - A wine shop owner and revolutionary in the poor Saint Antoine sector of Paris He was a servant to Dr Manette before the doctors imprisonment He is secretive intelligent and a natural leader Madame Defarge - The wife of Monsieur Defarge Her character personifies revolution She patiently awaits the beginning of the French Revolution violence and hatred boiling within her Jerry Cruncher - An odd-jobs man for Tellsons Bank He is gruff mean superstitious and uneducated His job at Tellsons Bank is probably the first honest job he has ever had Cruncher is an oafish character who often provides comic relief Miss Pross - The servant
