Theres oil in Cuba and lots of it Geologists are estimating as much as 5 billion barrels exist off the coast of Cuba and those are the tail ends of the approximations Some have even placed the mark to as much as 20 billion barrels of potential black gold If these numbers hold true then Cuba would become one of the top dozen producers in the world These numbers are astounding yes but theres one simple problem in terms with us the United States It seems that we are still in a bind to our embargo with Cuba ceasing all trade and relations with a country that posed as a serious threat to communism in the Western Hemisphere 50 years ago After reading several articles from national media sources such as TIME and CNN among others it is obvious to understand the medias take on this entire issue The discovery of oil in Cuba is relatively new with mentioning of the said discovery as early as October 2008 However the attention has once again caught the public eye now that a massive Chinese built deep-water rig named Scarabeo 9 is heading its way to the northern coast of Cuba The rig itself was constructed in China and owned by Italian energy giant Eni spA The massive rig built with todays latest technology will be first used by Spanish energy company Repsol at an operating cost of over 400000 a day Norways Statoil Indias ONGC will be using the 53000 ton behemoth for exploration drilling as well State owned companies from Brazil and Venezuela are also signing up to take part in the developments off the Cuban and Florida shorelines Florida Yes the state of a country that has purposefully left itself out of a potential goldmine in its own backyard We the United States are choosing to sit on the sidelines because of the apparent fact that a nation that consumes only 60000 bopd a
