The Prince of Tides absent parents Hardships such as separation divorce and other struggles plague and have a deep impact on many contemporary families As a result families can become dysfunctional or sometimes even destroyed due to the overwhelming stress The lasting effects and scars that these situations leave behind have a particularly damaging effect on children In his The Prince of Tides Pat Conroy so vividly illustrates the effects that these adversities bring on families The absence of parents appears frequently in Conroys novel First and foremost there is the issue of divorce and separation We first observe this problem appear when Tolitha leaves Amos and eventually find another husband As a result of this Henry their son became perplexed by why his mother had left Eventually he concludes that his father was too weak of a husband and father As a result of his parents separation Henry becomes a violent and menacing husband and father He convinced himself that this behavior would compel his wife to stay with him and his children would have respect for him However his conclusions were wrong and the next case of divorced in the Wingo family occurred between Henry and his wife Lila She waited for a time when Henry was powerless in his childrens lives to finally divorce him which she had been saying she was going to do for a while without ever taking action Henry by this time was growing weaker and emerging as a destroyed harmless man The divorce only knocked him off balance more and devastated him It effected each of the children differently Savannah believed that her father deserved it and was unforgiving towards both of her parents because of her childhood Tom and Luke we in shock and felt sorry for there powerless father and had forgiven him for their horrific childhood Tom held his mother in great contempt for doing this to his father and it angered him more
