The idea of losing ones self is the idea that one can temporarily forget about what is going on in their current life in order to take a break from the stresses within it In Martha Stouts work When I Woke up Tuesday Morning it was Friday she discusses how one can dissociate or the brain can make an individual feel as if they are not in a situation This leaves one with no memory of the previous situation This can sometimes be a positive entity as the mind often dissociates from traumatizing experience leaving the individual with no memory of the pain In Karen Armstrongs work Homo Religious she also supports the idea that a temporary loss of self can be beneficial She makes the claim that a loss of self will lead to an enhancement of being However the idea of losing ones self can also be detrimental to a person For example in Carrs work Is Google Making us Stupid he makes the claim that instead of participating fully in life one loses themselves within the Internet and modern day technology While losing the self can endanger an individual the idea of losing ones self is overall beneficial Even though losing the self can cause one to miss out on small fragments of their lives this idea generally leads to an enhancement of being and gives one protection from the harsh cruelties of lifeThe idea of losing ones self can prohibit ones ability to fully participate in life For example in Stouts When I Woke up Tuesday Morning it was Friday the author gives an example of Julia Julia is patient who has gone through numerous traumatic experiences in her life and because of these experiences Julias brain begins to block out lapses of time from her memory She states She Julia was not there for the direct experience She was somewhere else the briefcase the breakfast the kids
