The Reconstruction and Blacks The goal of the Reconstruction was to heal the wounds inflicted by both the North and the South left by the Civil War The Reconstruction which dated approximately from 1863 to 1867 succeeded in reuniting the nation nearly separated by the Civil War However the promised civil equality for Blacks was only short-lived There are several reasons that the Reconstruction did not bring justice and social and economic equality to freed Blacks The federal government retreated from the defense of equal rights for black people The provided documents show the gradual change in the discrimination of Blacks Documents A B and C prove that the federal government did attempt to bring justice to black people through three amendments in the course of five years to the U S Constitution The 13th Amendment demolishes the idea of slavery the 14th Amendment ensures Blacks the rights of a citizen of the United States and the 15th Amendment ensures Blacks the right to vote Though these amendments were presented and established it did not change the attitudes of whites towards slaves Many Whites greeted the Blacks with animosity They still faced discrimination as presented in documents D and E The political cartoon Worse than Slavery by Thomas Nast manifests the continuing prejudice In this cartoon a Confederate soldier and a member of the Ku Klux Klan are seen holding a skull a representative of death over a pair of Negroes Of course the Confederates protested against their loss of the war and despised the freedom of slaves The Ku Klux Klan founded in 1866 had similar beliefs of those of the Democratic Party They sought the restoration of white superiority as well Because these racist groups existed the plan for the equality of colored people failed The cartoon is pointing out that the discrimination Blacks faced after their emancipation was worse than when slavery existed Klansmen intimidated African Americans by forcibly removing them
