Women of both black and white skin contrasts have struggled extensively during the era of slavery They both have gone through extreme measures and had several roles as mothers wives and servants However enslaved and free black women had more power with the African American communities than free white women did in the European communities The power that was dominant with the black women was not present within the white women for the reason that they were used to revolting against unjust matters This type of power can be depicted through both females relationships with the white masters the female voice in any organization and the family structure of both black and white homes Enslaved African American Women and their MastersThe relationships between the women slaves and their masters was seen as overpowering and male dominant The masters would assign household and fieldwork but at the end of the day the slaves were forced to perform sexual activity as well According to the African-American Odyssey abuse of black women began during the Middle Passage and continued after the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865 Hines 2007 p156 These sexual intercourses resulted in the masters having children that he could sell for higher prices Although the slaves had no voice in such acts they obeyed their master and performed what was told However the outcome of the babies could have been severe due to the unsanitary foods that were digested In addition while slavery was occurring there were no physicians to treat them The only way there was cures was because enslaved African Americans used traditional remediesderived from Africa and passed down by generations of womento treat the sick Hines 2007 p 159 There was no denying in these tasks Jones 1982 stated always on call women servants often had to snatch a bite to eat whenever they could remain standing in the presence of whites and sleep on the floor
