In the film residents of a town are inexplicably turning intorhinoceroses Stanley a office clerk and a alcoholic watches thetransformations from a distance After a while the strange occurrencescome into his life as his neighbor and best friend John and his loveinterest Daisy become part of the human-into-rhinoceros metamorphosisthat is taking place Eventually Stanley realizes that he may be theonly human left among the new rhino majority The story ultimatelybecomes a tale of non conformity in the end Rhinoceros ends with Stanley standing at the top of a buildingscreaming that he will not conform This act sums up the entire moviebecause it almost became fashionable towards the end to become arhinoceros This line of thinking is evident in Daisy when she hearsthe rhinos out side of Stanleys apartment and she becomes entrancedwith their singing Stanley holds on tightly to his human identitynever comprehending why someone would want to be anyone elseWith everyone turning into a rhinoceros it forces Stanley to make himself change as well from a apathetic alcoholic into almost a savior ofhumanity if you will John continually exhorts Stanley to exercise morewill-power and not surrender to lifes pressures Other characterssuch as Norman and Carl seem to do just that as they control their owndestiniesThe savagery of the rhinos and Johns transformation showoff this desire for power Rhinoceros seems to be a symbol of mansinherent savage nature The strong characters like John fail theultimate test of will power The rhino epidemic and their crumblingwills are shown by their subtler evasions of responsibility Even Daisyfor instance wants to live a guiltless life What Rhinoceros saysabout society is its all about conformity People will always conformto whatever is fashionable Like the case in this movie where everyoneis turning into a rhino conforming is not always a good thing When Ithink of this statement I think about the mass
