Sara Connolly THE RISE OF CHRISTIANITY AND THE DECLINE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE Many people lost their faith in the government so they tried to put it in religion Some people became attracted to Christianity strange but new It also made sense with the strict moral code and the descriptions of society of being evil so the Romans began converting Christianity offered a positive attitude to humanity a belief in the sacredness of human life and mutual love A benefit of Christianity was that their god had a face which was easier to worship than a god that was unseen or unspeaking Jesus was a common man with a message and Romans could see their suffering in his Jesus promised a new world that would give Christians refuge from suffering and that appealed to Romans like his words deeds love for all and belief in justice Christianity had a benefit in being structured and united and it benefited from its being exposed to people overlooked or barred by other religions to women non-citizens and slaves It was pleasing to slaves because Christians declared that even though one would still be a slave in the real world in Gods eyes a good person was never a slave Christianity also appealed to the poor which also was aided by the claim that poverty was an advantage in achieving salvation after death Christianity was also easy to convert to opposed to many other religions because all that had to be done was a baptism Everyone could join Christianity and it was appealing to upper class citizens too Many upper class women converted to Christianity more than men so unmarried Christian women looked for husbands among the poor and the slaves Even those theses marriages were illegal under Roman law the bishop of Rome permitted them When someone became
