The Importance of Nonconformity Most of the things we decide are not what we know to be the best We say yes merely because we are driven into a corner and must do so Frank Crane has captured the concept that society drives its members to form decisions that coincide with its beliefs rather than to formulate self-governed thoughts Since the dawn of civilization there has been an ongoing conflict between the influences of society and ones own individualism A selection by Ralph Waldo Emerson entitled Self-Reliance reflects upon this social polarity Emersons writing implies that thoughts of an individual should be more impacting than those forced upon by society An individual who is guided by his or her own internal beliefs rather than being swayed by the external pressures placed by conformist will be more self-fulfilled Societys unsatiable desire to obtain the accord of every person is a hindrance to independent thought Nothing should be allowed to suffocate these thoughts The mind should be a place of unquestionable solitude where no one is allowed to force influence An example of this is found in Self-Reliance Emerson writes Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind This helps explain that the mind is the most important place to maintain individualism The society tries many ways to enter and build influence in the mind This popularity band places its morals upon man trying to get him to stray from his own Society tries to make man conscious of how he ranks within the majority so society creates titles to live by An example is in Emerson writing Good and bad are but names very readily transferable to that or this the only right is what is after my constitution the only wrong is against it This illustrates that the ideals placed by society should not be recognized ahead of ones intuitiveness Rather than repressing free thought society should encourage it Also society
