The setting of the novel The Circle of Friends is in the 1950s Ireland The focus of the novel is on Benny Hogan and Eve Melon her best friend The narrative also centers round and about Benny and Eve as they join college life Dublin At the college they reunite with their childhood friend Nan Mahon the ice-cool also referred to as college belle Nan was raised in a family that experienced domestic violence and she believed she could allure herself attract a powerful man and heave her standard of living Nan is the object of love affairs with Simon who is the patrons family son and heir in her village She had a plan to get pregnant and in order to become the new mistress in the village did not go through because Simon later buys her off and ends the affair Nan fibs that Jack is the father of the child she had even when the relationship Jack had with Benny was over since she was determined to inherit the business of Bennys father who had died The role that Nan Mahon plays in the Circle of Friends novel portrays her as a determined woman who wants to move out of her fathers house and make her life better She is also an attractive and ambitious woman from a working class family in Dublin Binchy 514 She seeks to marry into wealth and believes that Eve provides her with the best opportunity to realize her objective 532 This paper will examine the effectiveness of the Nans role in the novel The Circle of Friends as far as overall narration is concerned from the perspective of the audience and their expectationIn most cases romance creates a stereotypical representation of a woman and almost all the heroines of a romance movie or novel have similar characteristics The plot in most cases tends to flow in similar ways while focus on the heroine of the novel
