Always believe in what is known about others not what has been heard A rumor is something that was heard and was spread that could or could not be true but most of the time it is indeed false In Arthur Millers The Crucible he shows that a rumor can not only hurt a person but change how that person views and feels about themselves Abigail a main character is changed by the end of The Crucible because of the gossip heard around Salem For instance when her uncle saw her and the other girls in the woods dancing naked around a fire Abigail began lying When Betty woke up and whimpers Abigail says My you seem improving I talked to your papa and I told him everything 19 Abigail didnt tell Parris because she would be accused of witchcraft and would have to explain herself Betty tells Abby that she knows Abby drank blood and didnt tell her uncle Parris Abigail also changed after her relationship ended with John Proctor When the relationship ended Abby still had hopes that it would continue When Abby tried to get Johns attention he told her off and said it never happened and it wouldnt happen again To keep up with her lies she had to continue to lie to her family friends and the court When Abigail couldnt handle her lying anymore she later turned up as a prostitute in Boston 146 Abigail was a sweet innocent seventeen year old house keeper who got into some trouble and began lying to make sure she wouldnt get into any more trouble Unfortunately her plan back fired and she lost sight of who she really was and left her family and friends behind in Salem John Proctor for example another main character in The Crucible changes the way he views himself due to a rumor At the end of the play John had committed two crimes adultery
