In the 17th Century the Puritans had a strict moral way of living which included a strong supernatural belief that Satan existed Outspoken individuals that were fortunate or misfortunate were considered socially undesirable to the Salem Town Community From February 29th 1692 to September 22nd 1692 over 150 people were accused of witchcraft in return the people accused received imprisonment or death The witch trials originated from two young girls that were related to Rev Samuel Parris in 1692 whom became very ill Socially undesirable people had a higher risk of being accused of witchcraft following by death or imprisonment until an Act was created by the colonial legislature on October 17th 1711 In 1692 Rev Samuel Parris had a daughter by the name of Elizabeth Betty who was 9 years old and a niece named Abigail Williams whom was 11 years old During the winter the girls listened to Tituba their slave tell forbidden tales of magic and island folklore knowing it was against the Puritan code of morality Suddenly the girls showed strange behaviors such as diving under furniture and complaining of a fever and then Rev Samuel Parris called William Griggs the village doctor William Griggs did his exam and he did not find any medical problems with the girls Later after he completed his second exam he again was unsuccessful in finding any medical problems and therefore determined that the sickness originated from the supernatural or an evil spirit After the doctors diagnosis Tituba baked a rye cake with the girls urine and fed it to a dog after being advised by Mary Sibley a neighbor Suspicion of witchery was then raised upon Tituba who baked a witch cake and also told voodoo tales to the girls Ministers along with the parents of the girls relentlessly questioned them of their tormentors The girls finally named
