"Your use of narrative details in describing the events makes this an engaging and dynamic read. I recommend incorporating your sources in some way (check with your instructor or style guide) so the reader can understand where you are drawing the information from, particularly as regards the descriptions of the events; likely you will use in-text citations and works cited or a bibliography.

The relatively brief exploration of "why" and "how" this happened toward the end is really interesting; I found myself wanting more of this analysis. This made me wonder what your prompt emphasizes for the project: a description of what happened or a thesis-driven essay on why--so, do read over the prompt to make sure the balance of the essay is where it needs to be to meet your instructor's expectations. As regards those later paragraphs, the brief reference to presumption of innocence could be probed further: how did they justify setting this aside? Perhaps more connections between the last two paragraphs (religion, law) could firm up the ended--I can see this being done in another, final paragraph, or by weaving in more explicit explanations across the current last two paragraphs."
