The Shattering Of Richards Guiltless Heart Throughout the play Richard portrays himself as a strong-willed man who knows what he wants and will do whatever it takes to achieve his desires Everyone around him falls prey to his manipulation and are fooled into thinking that hes confident kind and just Yet beneath Richards poised exterior looms a heart thats torn between his desire for power and the monster of his conscience that dwells just below the surface of his mind Feeling as if hes inadequate without being king Richards primary goal is to be powerful and have control over everyone He goes on a murderous rampage killing everyone in his way and ignoring the conscience that lies dormant in his heart After being visited by the ghosts of his innocent victims he begins to question himself and what hes done Swirling through his brain while asleep many of the ghosts curse him saying Let me sit heavy on thy soul tomorrow53131 and Despair and die53135 Theyve confronted him now whereas earlier he didnt see the expression on their faces as they died and was unaware of their feelings He was quite disconnected from the reality of their deaths because he didnt perform the deeds himself and therefore wasnt vulnerable to the chance of his guilt haunting him After Richard awakes his character shifts and all of a sudden he seems weak and vulnerable mentioning that Cold fearful drops stand on my trembling flesh 53181 He shows human-like qualities rather than the qualities of a soulless monster when he shows his fear of what will come of him in the battle when Tomorrows vengeance is on the head of Richard 53206 It is as if throughout the play his heart is shielded by armor making him blind to see the evil of his deeds and impenetrable to the guilt that any human would normally experience Once hes visited by the ghosts the shield
