This assignment will consider how the structure of the family has changed over the last hundred years and what social implications these changes might have It will take into account a number of sociological theories on the functional aspects of the family and will assess the effect of industrialisation upon the structure of the familyIt will identify factors affecting family roles and relationships with reference to gender roles and will conclude by identifying patterns and causes of marital breakdown and in doing so assess the impact of the breakdown of marriage on the nuclear family as the conventional family unit11The nuclear family also known as the traditional family is made up of a husband and wife with one or more children Increasing support for this view is from the New Right perspective as they believe the state has a duty to strengthen the traditional family The nuclear family was generally accepted to have the following characteristics To be composed of mother father and two or three children biologically related They should live together The relationship between the two adults should be a heterosexual relationship and to be married Women should be primarily responsible to nurturing and childcare whilst the male role is the head of the household who provides financially for the family In addition of the New Right view they encourage the nuclear family as they believe it is the best kind of family to provide a stable environment for the children They believe the tradition family has been undermined by easier abortion the NHS making the contraceptive pill available on prescription more divorce and cohabitation the rise of lone parents more illegitimate births family diversity and women taking mens jobs making it harder for the men to be breadwinners All of these changes are seen as evidence of collapsing morals and a crisis to the family and as leading to other problems such as growing crime teenage pregnancy and drug abuse Criticisms of
