For example, consider "The Senate lost most of its former power" (versus the original "the power it used to possess"). I would also like to recommend a reorientation of your closing words, "Even though it is now merely a tourist attraction...": certainly this is a demotion, but could this be fashioned into a statement that both balances the narrative of decline of the preceding paragraph while also remarking upon the phenomenon of tourism as an assertion of value?"
