Discuss the significance of transgression social sexual political in tragedyTransgression is a necessary feature of tragedy This is because it is only through transgression of what is commonly accepted behavior or normal sanctioned experience of life that one can experience the truly tragic Whether one takes an Aristotelian or neo-classical view that tragedy evokes fear and pity in the audience or as a way to break beyond the limitations laid down by society it is only by an examination of limits and edges of what is considered acceptable can we take advantage of the insights that the tragic affords I will examine the significance and role transgression plays in The Homecoming and The Goat I will briefly attempt to analyse the nature of transgression in Aristotelian and Greek tragedy The Goat while being a modern play has many affinities with Greek tragedy and I will critically analyse the way in which Albees use of transgression corresponds to Aristotelian and Greek uses I will explore the way in which modern absurdist theatre of Harold Pinter espouses any pedagogical or moral function of theatre and instead uses transgressions of social codes in tragedy as a way to gain new understandings of life and the human experience In the Poetics Aristotle describes a tragic transgression as an error which initiates the sequence of tragic event which has been described as Hamartia Aristotle initially seems to exclude any moral dimension to Hamartia he argues that the change from good to bad fortune in a tragedy must not be due to depravity but to a serious error In his introduction to the Penguin Classics edition of the Poetics Heath argues that a definition of Hamartia that excludes any moral content is too restrictive Hamartia then includes errors made in ignorance or through misjudgment but it will also include moral errors of a kind which do not imply wickedness Aristotles attempt to prescribe the best kind of tragic plot is therefore
