Beowulf is an epic poem that took place in what is now Sweden and Denmark The writing dates back to the time of Old English which is a time in which women were not of authority or seen as more than house cleaners Women in those days were treated like servants and this is evident in Beowulf However even though in the days of Beowulf women were dependent not highly looked upon and not seen to be of high importance they expressed independence in subtle ways were very humble especially to their husbands and were very important in keeping the kingdoms balanced and keeping their husbands content InBeowulf some women demonstrate their individuality and independence this is more prevalently seen with WealhteowHrothgar awarded Beowulf gifts for defeating Grendel howeverWealhteow presents Beowulf a torque of gold to Beowulf in the presence of everyone in the mead hall expressing her individuality from Hrothgar 1215-1217 However based on the societal norms women were to act as one with their husbands so a gift from their husband would be from both of them Wealhteow did not conform to this societal norm and instead gave Beowulf a torque of gold expressing her personal gratitude for defeating Grendel This act of independence and gratitude shows Wealhteows courteous and independent characterIn expressing her independence and strength as a mother Wealhteowgives Beowulf a motherly command in line 1226-1227 Wealhteow said Treat my sons with tender care be strong and kind 1226-1227 This statement is shocking because in the days of Beowulf women did not give commands to men but on the contrary would receive commands from menTherefore byWealhteow commanding Beowulf she demonstrates her strength as a woman and her concern as a mother for her children Continuing on the theme of independence Wealhteowdid not need Hrothgar to speak on her behalf as was custom in the days of Beowulf but instead spoke for herself Wealhteow is showing her independence as
