Miniver Cheevy and The Unknown Citizen are short poems that have numerous similarities and distinctions Miniver Cheevy is about a man who despises the world that he lives in and is very despondent because he longs for the past The Unknown Citizen is a about a man who has completely conformed to his society By comparing and contrasting the two poems I discovered that I was able to comprehend the poems better and their messages became clearer to me I discovered that both poems are similar because they are poetic satires and both of the settings take place in the modern world However the poems differ because the speakers of the poems write from different points of view and the characterizations of the protagonists are different One of the similar aspects of Miniver Cheevy and The Unknown Citizen is that they are written in a satirical style where the speaker of Miniver Cheevy ridicules Miniver because of his extreme fixation for the past The speaker of the poem explains that Miniver loved the days of old when swords were bright and steeds were prancing the vision of a warrior bold would set him dancing Robinson 401 This visualization most likely describes a knight during medieval times Miniver was the fur trimming on clothing used during medieval times It was used to adorn the robes of royal families which coincides with Minivers longing for the past It is interesting how the title itself plays with Minivers longing for olden days The Unknown Citizen is a satire that depicts the standardization and conformity of an individual to the greater community Auden 407 The speaker of the poem states that the Unknown Citizen was one against whom there was no official complaint and all his reports on his conduct agree Auden 407 This poem pokes fun at a perfect person who is a follower that has conformed to the society Along with being satirical poems both
