Weather young or old people in different environments always behave in different ways This is the case with the Englishman in the town and the Englishman in the country who differ since there are restraints placed upon people in the town but people in the country can give scope to their natural feelings According the passage others are apt to form an unfavorable opinion of an Englishman in the town One who sees an Englishman in the town fells that he is always either absorbed in business or distracted by the thousand engagements Thus London is calculated to make men selfish and uninteresting since it presents but the cold superficies of character This is because there are restraints that keep the individual from giving scope to his natural feelings Unlike the Englishman in the town the Englishman in the country breaks loose gladly from the cold formalities and negative civilities of town He is able to put no constraint either upon his guests or himself and is free from the immense cold environment of London In my own life I have been in a situation where I felt restrained by formalities and was unable to be myself This was when I went with my parents to have dinner with my fathers former professor in graduate school The setting was at the professors elegant house and when I first arrived I felt a sense of over formality The butler greeted us and led us into the cold and immense living room I chatted awkwardly for a while and after about an hour dinner was announced I felt out of place in the elegant dining room dress in my casual pants and blouse Even though the professor was very hospitable and gregarious the formality was a restraint which kept me from being myself and giving scope to my natural feelings When any person is restrained an unfamiliar environment he behaves differently from if he were in a
