About two hours outside of Dallas Texas is a little town called Kilgore known for oil drilling and the birth of the modern halftime show The Kilgore College Rangerettes were the first dancedrill team founded to entertain football fans between halves From the outside the Rangerettes look like girls dressed up in cowgirl costumes that just dance on a football field Simply watching one of their impressive routines at a Kilgore Ranger football game does not do justice to how complex this team of girls actually is Though caught in the culture that is football in Texas the Rangerettes have a culture all their ownYou have to look behind the scenes to appreciate the effort that produces their shows I had that chance I returned to my home State of Texas for Easter and a friend of mine who is a Rangerette asked if I would like to come sit in on a practice On my drive to Kilgore I asked myself what sort of girls join this organization and what their goal was for being on this strange team I met my friend in her dorm which is only inhabited by the 58 girls on the team This isolates them from the rest of the student body at Kilgore College Every girl that passed by was tall thin and perfectly put together despite it being only10 oclock in the morning From there we went to the auditorium where they practice The girls milled about until an older woman walked in The room went silent as the girls immediately scurried to form six straight lines on the stage at attention with their arms behind their backs like a military regiment Good morning the older woman exclaimed Good Morning Ms Blair said the girls in unison The older woman who I assumed to be Ms Blair yelled a series of commands which sent the girls leaping and twirling to different songs It was like watching an
